Amid an indefinite suspension of operations, the Philippine National Railways (PNR) on Friday conducted a test run from its station in Tutuban in Manila to Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

Sen. Cynthia Villar, chair of the Senate committee on government corporations and public enterprises, said the test run was necessary to ensure the safety of the commuting public before the trains become operational.

“Before the resumption of the trips, we have to have an assurance that passengers will be safe and that mechanisms are in place to ensure structural integrity of the tracks, bridges, and station facilities,” said Villar, who attended the PNR test run.

However, the resumption of PNR operations still has no definite date.

The PNR temporarily suspended its operations on May 5 to conduct a “system-wide” inspection of its rail tracks following the derailment of two rail cars on April 29 which injured 80 passengers.

Villar said the derailment and delayed resumption of operations revealed serious “safety concerns” for more than 70,000 commuters who ride the PNR daily.

“It cannot be denied that the PNR train service has deteriorated through the years, but it remains to be the cheapest mode of transportation that our people in the lowest-income can afford,” she said.

The lady senator also urged PNR officials to coordinate with local government units in securing rail tracks, especially after initial reports eyed missing track parts as a possible cause of the derailment.

“I believe PNR trains can still improve so it can serve more Filipinos in the different parts of the country,” Villar added.
