Palace: Binay promise of wages for execs needs study

A Palace official on Sunday said the plan of Vice President Jejomar Binay to give wages and benefits to almost two million barangay officials nationwide would need further study.

Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said Binay’s proposal could have an impact on the country’s budget and fiscal system.

“Kailangang isailalim sa pag-aaral ang panukalang ‘yan,” (That proposal needs study) Coloma said over radio dzRB. “‘Yung pagbibigay ng regular na sahod sa mga barangay official ay magkakaroon ng budgetary implications.” (Giving regular salaries to barangay officials would have budgetary implictions.)

He said any proposed law increasing the benefits or salaries of government officials would come under scrutiny of the Committee on Appropriations.

In a visit in Pagbilao, Quezon on Saturday, Binay vowed to give salaries and benefits to barangay officials if he would be elected president next year.

“This I promise if the present administration will not act on this,” Binay was quoted in an Inquirer report.
