In an earlier statement, Ched approved an average tuition increase of P29.86 per unit, while the average increase allowed for other school fees was P135.60 for the upcoming school year.
A total of 405 higher educational institutions (HEIs) applied for fee increase.
The National Capital Region (NCR) has the most number of private colleges, which will increase fees with 51 schools, followed by Calabarzon and Davao Regions with 33 schools each and Central Visayas with 32 HEIs.
Schools in Region 8 or the Eastern Visayas region were not allowed to raise their school fees as the region is still reeling from the devastation of Super Typhoon “Yolanda” (International name: Haiyan).
Meanwhile, an Inquirer report said that private colleges in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) decided to not raise school fees for this year so as not to discourage parents from sending their children to school.
Ched said that the approval of tuition and other school fees was in accordance with Memorandum Order 3, Series of 2012. The commission maintained that it adheres to the guidelines provided by law in approving tuition fees.
