Shootouts ensue in Rio de Janeiro slum, lift death toll to 6
RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian police say two more men have been killed in the same Rio de Janeiro slum where gunfire erupted earlier this weekend, raising the death toll to 6.
Authorities said the two men were taken to the hospital early Sunday where they died as a result of the bullet wounds.
The shootouts broke out Friday night in the slums around the picturesque and touristy neighborhood of Santa Teresa. Police say they appear to be gang related. Five people were injured then, including a pregnant woman and three boys who were playing soccer and may have been used as shields, according to local media.
The area, like many other slums across Rio, is seeing a policing program meant to push out gangs ahead of the 2016 Olympics.
