The National Press Club (NPC) has condemned the killing of former Inquirer correspondent Melinda “Mei” Magsino.

“We condemn this. The National Press Club condemns this because murder is murder,” Joel Sy Egco, NPC President said in an interview with Radyo Inquirer Tuesday.

The 40-year-old Magsino was killed at high noon on Monday as she was walking on a street in Barangay (village) Balagtas few meters from her apartment in Batangas.

Egco said the NPC would partner with the Volunteers Againnst Crime and Corruption (VACC) to focus on cases involving the murder of journalists and other media personalitties.

“So we’re going to have memorandum of agreement to partner with VACC to focus on these cases,” he said.

He said that the NPC will extend financial assistance to the family of Magsino aside from the legal assistance it will provide.

If proven that the death of Magsino is media-related, Egco said the it would bring the number of media killings under the administration of President Benigno Aquino III to 32. IDL
