The term “storm surge” became known among Filipinos after Supertyphoon “Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan) hit the country in 2013. The typhoon resulted in storm surges as high as two-storey buildings. These giant walls of seawater rushed inland and washed out entire communities, killing thousands of people in Eastern Visayas.
The US National Weather Service defines a storm surge as an “abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tide.” Kristine Angeli Sabillo/ IDL
