DAVAO CITY—Two soldiers were killed in a landmine incident perpetrated by suspected communist rebels in Surigao del Sur, the military reported on Friday.
Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad, commander of the Army’s Eastern Mindanao Command, said a military convoy—composed of five military trucks—was passing by Mahayag village in San Miguel town on their way to Agusan del Sur when it was ambushed by New People’s Army rebels on Wednesday.
The explosion, according to Baladad, killed Sgt. Luisito Marimon and Cpl. Rey Gerson from the Army’s 4th Artillery Battalion.
Twelve soldiers were also injured in the ensuing firefight, he said.
A rebel was also killed and another one captured following the gun battle, Baladad said. With a report from Jeoffrey Maitem/RC
