MANILA, Philippines—The military will be on red alert beginning today in preparation for the 46th anniversary of the New People’s Army (NPA) on Sunday.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said the alert status will be in effect until Monday, during which troops will not be allowed to leave their posts.
“We are working closely with the Philippine National Police and the local government units in monitoring the NPA. We will take preemptive measures to thwart their evil plans such as mounting violent attacks against communities and government installations,” said AFP public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc.
The military is going on red alert in anticipation of rebel attacks especially in far-flung areas, government structures and communities which do not support them.
Cabunoc said the alert status is a precautionary measure to increase the number of troops at their duty stations. Julie M. Aurelio
