‘Quiel’ intensifies; Signal No. 1 up over 3 provinces in N. Luzon

MANILA, Philippines – Tropical Storm “Quiel” has intensified as it appeared headed towards extreme Northern Luzon, prompting the state-run Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) to put three provinces on its path – Cagayan, Isabela, and the Babuyan Group of Islands – under Signal No. 1.

In its 4 a.m. forecast, Pagasa said Quiel was moving 770 kilometers east of Aparri Cagayan with maximum sustained winds 130 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness 160 kph.

Quiel is moving westward faster at 22 kph from the previous 19 kph and has widened its diameter from 300 kilometers to 400 kilometers, Pagasa said.

It said that the estimated rainfall would be from 15-25 millimeters per hour.
