By immediately making him undergo a bone marrow test after doctors diagnosed him to be suffering from acute lymphocytic leukemia, the parents of nine-year-old Adrian Pol Abamo, residents of Tandang Sora, Quezon City, may have saved his life. The results of the test gave doctors an idea of how serious Adrian’s condition was. They prescribed 12 cycles of chemotherapy for the Grade 2 student—a procedure he completed within two years—and then placed him under maintenance medication.
Adrian’s mother, Rosie, said that despite his ailment, her son continued his studies except that his classmates teased him about having to use a facial mask. “He would sometimes come home crying because he couldn’t stand being called so many names just because he’s wearing a mask,” she said.
Attending physicians at the Philippine Children’s Medical Center, meanwhile, advised her and her husband, Renato, to prepare their son for two more bone marrow tests, including a cytospin procedure, to make sure that the treatment was successful.
For these, they would need P27,000—P10,000 each for the two bone marrow tests and P7,000 for the cytospin procedure.
