A British national and his Filipina fiancée were injured after their black Kia Sportage was hit by a 10-wheeler truck at the South Coastal Road in Talisay City around noon yesterday.
The couple were on their way to Cebu City to make arrangements for their upcoming wedding.
Maria Lourdes Amatril, 38, said she just had minor bruises but her fiancé Michael Terrence Plaice, 68, needed surgery for a broken arm. She said it was the truck that smashed into their vehicle.
Both residents of Balirong, Naga City, were brought to the Chong Hua Hospital for treatment.
The collision caused traffic congestion that lasted several hours in barangay Tangke.
PO2 Amelito Hornales of the Talisay City police said the truck driven by Jose Borbon, 44, was traveling in the same direction as the couple’s vehicle toward Cebu City.
The driver and his truck boy Tata Inocencio alleged that the Sportage suddenly overtook the truck and blocked their way. The truck was loaded with limestone (“anapog”) from Alcoy town.
Borbon said his truck was running at normal speed when the Sportage overtook him and entered his lane. He said it was too late to apply the brakes. He said the truck dragged the Sportage until the truck fell on the SUV.
Borbon was detained at the Talisay police precinct pending the filing of charges. His truck boy was taken to a hospital in Cebu City for treatment. /Jhunnex Napallacan
