Doctor says menopausal stage a new beginning for women

AN officer of the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS) said the menopausal stage is a new chapter in the life of a woman and not an end.

Dr. Virginia Santos-Abalos, vice president of POGS, said women who go through menopause should go to gynecologists for checkup.

“They need more understanding, proper management and support from gynecologists,” she said.

Abalos was speaking in the runup to World Menopause Day that will be celebrated with aerobic exercises and free consultations  at the Ayala Center Cebu on Oct. 13, Saturday.

The theme of the event is “Menopause: Time of my life.”

Abalos said  the menopausal stage for women is unique.

“There is a sudden decrease in estrogen. They become unpleasant. Osteoporosis is the biggest hazard for women because in the first year of menopause, they slowly lose bones,” she said.

“There is a decline in the bodily function. We can delay it with some maneuvers and healthy living.”

She said some women who undergo menopause are fortunate because they don’t have mood swings.

“What is important is the learning. As early as 40, they can prepare themselves,” Abalos said.
