MANILA, Philippines–Malacañang on Thursday said it is now looking for the next Commission on Elections (Comelec) chief as the poll body’s chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. is set to retire this February.
“The vetting process is still ongoing as this involves the appointment of a chairperson of an independent constitutional body,” Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a press briefing.
Coloma said due diligence is being exercised to ensure that the prospective appointee possesses the necessary qualifications and would meet the people’s expectations in terms of competence and integrity.
Brillantes, who was appointed by President Benigno Aquino III as Comelec chair in January 2011, continued the unexpired term of then Comelec Chair Jose Melo.
Coloma refused to give names in the shortlist for the said position.
Malacañang is also looking for new heads of the Commission on Audit and the Civil Service Commission as their respective heads are also set to retire.
