COA chief among candidates to replace retiring SC Justice

MANILA, Philippines—Commission on Audit Chairperson Grace Pulido-Tan is among the candidates to replace Supreme Court Associate Justice Roberto Abad who will retire on May 22.

Pulido-Tan was nominated by a certain Atty. Fides Cordero-Tan.

Aside from Pulido-Tan, other candidates are Court of Appeals Associate Justices Nina Antonio Valenzuela, Apolinario Bruselas, Rosmari Carandang, Ramon Paul Hernando, Jose Reyes, Noel Tijam, Court of Appeals Presiding Justice Andres Reyes Jr., Sandiganbayan Associate Justices Maria Cristina Cornejo, Rafael Lagos, Quezon City Regional Trial Court Presiding Judge Reynaldo Daway, Dean of Dela Salle University College of Law and chair of the Free Legal Assistance Group Jose Manuel Diokno, Commissioner Rowena Guanzon of the Commission on Audit and Solicitor General Francis Jardeleza.

Both Pulido-Tan and Jardeleza have been nominated for the Chief Justice post after Chief Justice Renato Corona was impeached. Pulido-Tan, however turned down the nomination while Jardeleza was included in the short-list of candidates.

The COA, under Pulido-Tan, is part of the Inter-Agency on Anti-Graft Coordinating Council (IAAGCC) that is conducting the inquiry that covers nongovernment organizations (NGOs) not under the scope of the probe being done by the Office of the Ombudsman in connection with the alleged P10-billion scam engineered by businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles.

Pulido-Tan was appointed by President Benigno Aquino III to head the COA in 2011.
