LOS BAÑOS, Laguna — The police chief of General Mariano Alvarez (GMA) in Cavite was killed as he and his men responded to a report of indiscriminate firing in the town Wednesday night.
Cavite police director Senior Superintendent Jonnel Estomo said on Thursday that a still unidentified gunman shot Chief Inspector Leo Angelo Llacer as the official and six other policemen investigated the incident in Barangay (village) De las Alas at about 7:30 p.m.
When the lawmen arrived, Llacer introduced himself to a group of men who were allegedly firing guns but the men barricaded themselves inside a house and began shooting through the window, Estomo said.
Llacer was hit in the abdomen and was rushed to a hospital. He died later that evening.
In a phone interview, Police Officer 3 Roy Poblete, who was with Llacer, said one of the gunmen, identified as Mando Luminog, was also shot in the ensuing shootout. Luminog was dead on arrival at the De La Salle hospital in Dasmariñas City, Cavite, he added.
Poblete said residents believed there were at least five men inside the house, identified as owned by a certain Romeo Villaganas Jr., before the shootout began.
Villaganas and the rest of the armed men escaped arrest.
“We think they were high on drugs because there was evidence (of illegal drugs) inside the house,” Poblete said.
He said follow up police operations were ongoing for the identification and arrest of the other gunmen.
