MANILA, Philippines–Due to the predawn fire that hit an old building on Escolta Street on Wednesday, the city government of Manila has recommended to change the route of the Black Nazarene parade.
Instead of turning to Escolta Street, the parade on Friday will take the parallel Dasmariñas Street, television reports said.
The local building official, engineer Rogelio Legazpi, said it would be risky for devotees to pass through Escolta.
Authoritites are still determining the cause of fire that hit a portion of the dilapidated building formerly occupied by the City College of Manila, now known as Universidad de Manila.
It took firefighters six hours to completely put out the fire, which reached Task Force Bravo.
On Wednesday afternoon, Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada went to Escolta to personally check the condition of the building.
In a televised interview, Estrada said he would like the building to be demolished for the safety of residents there.
