Over 2,200 evacuated as Marikina River swells

MANILA, Philippines—A total of 2,253 people were evacuated as the Marikina River reached a critical level due to torrential rains spawned by Typhoon Pedring, officials said.

The residents, comprised of 452 families, were brought to four evacuation centers: 70 families (400 persons) in Nangka, 130 families (600 persons) in Concepcion Integrated School, 159 families (739 persons) in Bulelak, and 93 families (514 persons) in H. Bautista, disaster officials form the Marikina City government said.

Alert has been raised to second alarm at the Marikina River as it reached a critical level of 18 meters.

Meanwhile, Aquamarine and Lilac Streets in Concepcion Dos were monitored as unpassable due to floods, they said.
