Magnitude 5.5 quake jolts Eastern Visayas—Phivolcs

Eastern Samar Quake

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.5 tectonic quake rocked parts of Eastern Visayas with aftershocks expected, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Sunday morning.

The earthquake was recorded at 8:25 a.m with its epicenter located at 79 kilometers northeast of Hernani, Eastern Samar.

A 5.5 magnitude quake could mean that it could be “felt by everyone” as slight damages in buildings are incurred, according to the US Geological Survey.

Intensity I was felt at Tacloban City and Catbalogan City.

The Phivolcs Earthquake Intensity Scale describes an Intensity I quake as “scarcely perceptible,” meaning that it is “delicately balanced objects are disturbed slightly and still water in containers oscillates slowly.”

No damage was expected but Phivolcs warned of possible aftershocks.
