LRT halts operations

MANILA, Philippines – Operations of both lines of the Light Rail Transit were suspended for safety reasons Tuesday morning, said LRT Authority spokesman Hernando Cabrera as Typhoon “Pedring” whipped Metro Manila.

Cabrera said strong winds and power outages could endanger the safety of passengers if the two train lines were allowed to continue to operate.

“We are experiencing strong winds, flying debris and massive Meralco [Manila Electric Co.] power interruptions that pose serious risks to passengers and trains,” Cabrera said.

“We also want to avoid passengers being stranded in between stations during train stoppage, which is dangerous under the circumstances,” he said.

When asked when the trains would resume operations, Cabrera could not say.
