AFP told not to be swayed as election nears

MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino III on Thursday told personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) not to give in to personal interests as the 2016 national elections approach.

“The 2016 election is approaching and we know that during this time, some will attempt to use you for their personal interests,” Aquino said in Filipino in a speech at the AFP’s 79th anniversary at Camp Aguinaldo.

Aquino said soldiers are expected to maintain peaceful elections.

“It is our duty to maintain the peace during election period. Your troops are expected to remain with the side of the people,” Aquino said.

“To our soldiers, don’t forget that it is your obligation to do what is right and just at all times. Don’t give in to temptations and don’t be lured away from the straight path,” he said.

The President, also the AFP’s commander-in-chief, was guest of honor and speaker at the AFP anniversary rites.

Other guests at the event include Vice President Jejomar Binay, Senate President Franklin Drilon, US Ambassador Philip Goldberg and former President Fidel Ramos.
