Fire hits QC shanty area

MANILA, Philippines—Fire gutted two houses in a shanty community in Novaliches, Quezon City, Friday afternoon, leaving at least 12 families homeless.

Superintendent Jesus Fernandez, Quezon City Fire Marshall, said the fire hit two units of a seven-door apartment in Medalla Compound along Sarmiento Street, Barangay (village) Gulod ‎at 2:20 pm.

A lighted candle left inside the house may‎ have caused the fire, Fernandez said in a phone interview with Inquirer.net. The house is owned by Ike Medalla and rented by Junior Cerilo.

No one was reported hurt.

Damage to property was placed at P200,000.
