Magis Eagles rout Baby Panthers to stay on top

The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles hiked their record up to a league-leading 11-1 (win-loss) after they routed the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers, 88-72, in the juniors division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc.  basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

After getting their first taste of defeat last weekend, the Magis Eagles have found their hunger once more and they showed it on both ends of the floor against the Baby Panthers.

They had four players score in twin digits led by Dawn Ochea, who had 25 markers. Another big man, the lanky Mavii Suarez added 16, the same output as guard Aaron Sing while Julius Cadavis chipped in 11.

More importantly, the Magis Eagles showed their mettle on the defensive side of the floor as they held down USPF’s top gun Rommel Diapera to a measly 11-point production. Another one of USPF’s go-to guys, Winston Bolivar, fared even worse against the tough defense of SHS-AdC as he managed just four markers.

In another juniors division game, the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors eked past the Don Bosco Greywolves, 90-88.

USC was single-handedly carried by frail but feisty wingman, Ian Ortega, who scored a whopping 37 markers. Marlo Pono and Stephen Nierre combined for 46 points for Don Bosco in a losing cause.

In seniors action the other night, the USC Warriors pushed their record to 6-4 after they defeated the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, 72-62.

Mike Cantonao and Sam Hermosa each had 14 to pace the winning squad. Cantonao was deadly from behind the three-point arc as he connected on four in the first half.
