MANILA, Philippines–After three sleepless nights due to severe pain in her gallbladder, Dolores Villanueva suffered septic shock, a life-threatening condition that occurs when one’s blood pressure drops to dangerously low levels.
Her family had her treated at Ospital ng Maynila for chills and stomach pain. The mother of seven had also suffered a minor heart attack.
On Oct. 15, an endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) was performed on her to remove the stones in her gallbladder, according to her daughter Leonora Bautista.
“The whole episode, including the operation, has left us more than P100,000 in debt. We also have weekly expenses of P2,324 for her maintenance medicines,” said Bautista, a resident of San Andres Bukid, Manila.
Bautista said her 76-year-old mother, who raised the family by working as a laundry woman in the 1980s, still maintains a positive outlook in life. “She says she still wants to live longer. Any financial assistance will help her regain her strength,” she said.
