MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon “Ompong” (international name Vongfong) entered the Philippine area of Responsibility on Tuesday afternoon, the state weather bureau said.
Ompong, located 1,400 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, packs maximum sustained winds of 160 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 195 kph, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.
The typhoon, which entered PAR at 4p.m. is forecast to move west at 20 kph.
Glaiza Escullar of Pagasa said Ompong would not make landfall but would enhance the northeasterly winds on the eastern seaboards in Luzon.
Palawan, Bicol region, Visayas, Caraga, northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms, Pagasa said in its afternoon weather bulletin.
The provinces of Ilocos and the regions of Cagayan and Cordillera will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rains.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Ompong is expected to exit the country by Friday or Saturday.
