Today, Sept. 30, is the 76th birth anniversary of National Artist for Cinema Ishmael Bernal. As a filmmaker, he was hailed by critics as “the genius of Philippine cinema.” Among his notable films were “Pahiram ng Isang Umaga,” “Broken Marriage,” “Himala,” “City after Dark” and “Nunal sa Tubig.” After his death in 1996, he was conferred the national artist award in 2001.–Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
