MANILA, Philippines — Longer nights in the Philippines are expected after the autumnal equinox on Tuesday, September 23.
“Autumnal equinox will occur on September 23 when day and night will have equal length on Earth. Hence, thereafter, Philippine nights will be longer as the Sun moves below the celestial equator towards the southern hemisphere,” the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said in its astronomical diary.
The autumnal equinox means equal hours of day and night, which will occur at 10:29 a.m. Philippine time. After this, nights will be longer.
The equinox usually signals the change in season. There are two equinoxes in a year, the other is called vernal equinox, which happens in March.
Sunrise for Tuesday according to Pagasa’s extended weather bulletin was at 5:45 a.m., while sunset will be at 5:51p.m.
“This September equinox signal that winter is approaching in the northern hemisphere, and summer is approaching in the south. At equinox, the dividing line between the sunlit half of Earth and the nighttime half of Earth temporarily passes through Earth’s north and south spin poles,” the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said in its website.
