MANILA, Philippines—Cainta, Rizal has been placed under state of calamity as tropical storm “Mario” (international name: Fung-wong) continues to pummel parts of Luzon.
Mayor Kit Nieto, in a televised interview on Friday, said that “Mario”, with winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 100 kph, was the worst Cainta has experienced since typhoon “Ondoy” in 2009.
“After ‘Ondoy,’ this would be the next big thing in terms of calamities because of the volume of water,” Nieto said.
He said severe flooding in Cainta left stranded four of seven emergency teams sent out to assist in the rescue operations.
In Cainta, around 2,000 individuals have been affected and displaced by “Mario.”
Nieto said the local government of Cainta has set up 17 evacuation centers.
Of the 17, he said seven are five-story schools “big enough” to accommodate displaced residents.
“We are doing everything that we can. There are 600 people trying to bring them to safer ground,” Nieto added.
“Mario” swamped several parts of Metro Manila and its nearby provinces after bringing incessant rains since Thursday evening.
