Storm ‘Mario’ spawns floods in Virac, Catanduanes
VIRAC, Catanduanes, Philippines — Heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm “Mario” since Wednesday night caused flooding in several areas in this capital town Thursday.
Bob Monterola, of the Virac Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, said areas, particularly near the Catanduanes State University and Catanduanes National High School, were flooded.
He said residents were stranded on both sides of a swollen river in Barangay (village) Hicming, where a detour bridge was washed out by flooding less than a week ago.
Classes were suspended at 2 p.m. upon the directive of the Catanduanes Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
An ongoing provincial jamboree was also cancelled on its second day at the Catanduanes Athletic Complex as it was swamped by ankle-deep waters, Monterola said.
