CEBU CITY, Philippines—A tornado damaged the roofs of school buildings on Urgello Street in Barangay (village) Sambag 2 here about 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, the Cebu City Risk Reduction and Management Council (CCRRMC) said.
No one was reported hurt when the tornado ripped off the roof of Southwestern University Maritime College canteen, said Alvin Santillana, CCRRMC operations head.
The canteen and the classrooms were located on the third floor of three-story ABA Building located on the left side of Aznar Coliseum fronting the SWU oval.
Jonah Lafuente, SWU vice president for administration, said the tornado hit the third floor of the building that was used by maritime students.
He said roofs of the classrooms on the third floor were damaged, allowing the rain to drench the chairs and white boards.
The roof of the canteen on the building’s west wing was ripped off, he added.
Lafuente said the building was vulnerable to strong winds because it was located in the open area.
Cebu City and province have been experiencing incessant rains since Wednesday night, which triggered floods in several areas, prompting local and education officials to suspend classes.
The rains were triggered by Tropical Storm “Mario” which as of 4 a.m. Thursday, was spotted 460 kilometers east of Catarman town in Northern Samar, with sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour and gustiness of 80 kph.
