MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) needs an “intense and sustained cleansing” to get rid of cops who are involved in various crimes such as robbery, drugs and kidnappings, former senator and now rehabilitation czar Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said on Wednesday.

Lacson, who was PNP chief during the time of then President Joseph Estrada, issued the statement when sought to react to the recent robbery-hold up on Edsa allegedly involving policemen.
“The PNP at this point needs an intense and sustained internal cleansing,”he said in a text message to reporters.
“If the problem of cops getting involved in robbery holdups, drugs, extortion and kidnapping is not addressed vigorously, the erosion of public trust on our policemen will take its toll on the government’s overall peace and order campaign,” said Lacson.
Most reported crimes allegedly involving policemen, he said, linked police officers 1 or 2 as “prominent participants.”
“A thorough review of their recruitment system and training program therefore, should be undertaken immediately,” Lacson said.
“Most important and above all else is the time-honored ‘leadership by example’ principle. It is second to none,” he added.
