Sayyaf men kill Army officer in Basilan

MANILA, Philippines – An Army officer was killed in clashes with the Abu Sayyaf bandits in Basilan on Saturday night.

A military report said Captain Mark Gamboa, company commander of the 14th Special Forces Company of the 4th Special Forces Battalion, was killed by Abu Sayyaf members as clashes erupted while the troops were patrolling sitio (sub-village) Basak Tiki, Calagusan village in Lantawan town past 6 p.m.

The militants were led by a certain Halang (aka Commander Jeck).

Although the incident is still under investigation, a police report said the soldiers battled about 10 Abu Sayyaf members.

Gamboa was a member of Philippine Military Academy Class of 2006.
