MANILA, Philippines—Alleged members of Islamist rebel group Abu Sayyaf have released the chief mechanic they abducted more than a week ago, an Intelligence official said Wednesday.
In an email to INQUIRER.net, the official, who requested anonymity, said the abductors freed Ronald Peligrin on Monday.
Peligrin was seized last August 14 inside the Sulu Provincial Motor pool in Barangay (village) Bangkal, Patikul, Sulu.
He added that Peligrin was released near Barangay Danag, Patikul, Sulu, where he boarded a passenger jeep in Barangay Danag toward Jolo town.
Peligrin was abducted when the gunmen breached a government compound at night and killed Peligrin’s assistant, Dante Avila, when he tried to run away.
Peligrin was brought to the residence of Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan in Barangay Asturias, Jolo, Sulu.
