MANILA, Philippines – “We are not murderers,” so said Senator Nancy Binay after an erstwhile ally of her family insinuated during a Senate hearing on Tuesday that the Binays were out to harm him.
Former Makati Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado read before the Senate blue ribbon committee a letter he wrote to his family, saying that the Binay family, specifically Vice President Jejomar Binay, should be blamed if something bad happens to him.
“Wala ho sa ugali namin na mamatay-tao (We are not murderers),” Senator Binay said in an interview when sought to react to Mercado’s statement.
She said that if his life was indeed in danger, it is because of his debts.
The senator said she received reports that Mercado has a gambling problem, and is probably in bad need of money to pay his debts.
“Siguro kinakapos siya ngayon kaya nandito s’ya ngayon at nagpapagamit,” she said.
(Maybe he is in dire need of money that’s why he’s here allowing people to use him against us.)
“And I think you can check that kung papaano siya magtaya sa sabungan, sa casino, high roller nga yan. Alam ko dati lumilipad pa nga siya sa Las Vegas para mag-casino,” Senator Binay added.
(And I think you can check how he bets in cockfights and in the casino. He’s a high roller. As far as I knew, he would fly to Las Vegas just so he could go the casino.)
Mercado, in an interview after the hearing, admitted that he gambles, but denied that he was being used by anyone against the Vice President.
