MANILA, Philippines—Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares had shown in the past that ice runs through her veins when running after tax evaders, but on Tuesday, she had a bucket of ice and ice-cold water poured onto her in an effort to raise awareness on a disease that affects the nervous system.
Hernares accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge posed to her by news anchor Anthony Taberna. The dare is for a fundraising effort to raise awareness on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Taberna posted on his Instagram account the video of the commissioner doing the challenge.
Henares nominated BIR deputy commissioner Estela Sales to take on the dare.
In its website, the ALS Association said it has received $ 79.7million in donations as of August 25.
The ice bucket challenge is the latest craze on social media where a number of celebrities, athletes, business moguls, and other high-profile personalities have buckets of ice and ice-cold water dumped on them while tagging others to do the same.
According to the ALS Association in America, ALS “is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to (the patient’s) death.”
