Crime reports go down in 1st half of 2014

MANILA, Philippines – Reported crimes all over the country went down in the first half of 2014, compared to the same period in 2013.

This was according to statistics from the Philippine National Police, which showed that the total crime volume for January to June 2014 decreased by 15.63 percent from the number recorded in the same period in 2013.

The data came from the police blotters all over the country, which recorded crime incidents.

For the first half of this year, reported crimes were at 346,469 while the first half of 2013 registered 410,665.

This meant the total crime volume went down by 64,196 cases or 15.63 percent.

PNP data also showed that crime clearance and crime solution efficiency rates improved in the first half of the year.

Solved cases are instances wherein the offender was taken into custody and charged or prosecuted, while cleared cases mean that the offender was identified and charged for the crime. Cleared cases also include solved crimes.

The crime clearance efficiency for the first half of 2014 was at 49.87 percent, an improvement from the 38.45 percent for the same period in 2013.

Meanwhile, the crime solution efficiency for this year went up to 36.15 percent from last year’s 26.77 percent.

The PNP noted that in the past five years, the first half of 2013 registered the highest crime volume at 410,665 while the lowest for the same period was in 2012 at 110,464.

During the first semesters of 2010 to 2012, the total crime volume has been steadily decreasing – 168,191 from January to June 2010, 129,888 from January to June 2011, and 110,463 from January to June 2012.

However, this spiked up to 410,664 for the first half of 2013 and then decreased this year, the PNP said.
