More cops to fight Metro street crimes

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday sent 100 policemen to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) to boost the anti-crime drive in Metro Manila.
Instead of doing administrative work in Camp Crame, the officers were dispatched to patrol the streets to address the rise in crime incidents in the metropolis.
During a simple send-off ceremony in Crame, Superintendent Manuel Gaerlan, PNP Directorate for Personnel and Records Management executive officer, said the deployment is only provisional.
Gaerlan said the NCRPO would decide where to assign the augmentation forces.
But he made clear that these policemen will report to the NCRPO only during “identified periods of the day based on crime statistics.”
”There will be evaluation and assessment on deployment, maybe weekly. This is only a temporary arrangement until such time we could deploy trained policemen to stations and precincts,” he said.
Gaerlan said there is also a plan to use non-uniformed personnel to watch the streets.
“We have an ongoing recruitment for 7,369 non-uniformed personnel. The objective is to replace uniformed personnel doing administrative office work so they could be deployed outside,” he said.
