‘Trigger-happy’ jail officer shot dead by cops
MANILA, Philippines–A Malabon jail officer facing a complaint for indiscriminate firing was killed when he shot it out with policemen about to arrest him in Caloocan City on Sunday night.
JO1 Alfred Chan, 32, was in his house at Interville Subdivision in Talipapa, Barangay 164, when a police team composed of members of the Caloocan police sub-station 1, Special Response Unit and Caloocan City police arrived at 7:10 p.m.
According to a police report, Chan, who was facing a complaint for indiscriminate firing filed by his neighbors, “immediately drew his firearm,” a .45-cal. pistol, and fired upon the members of the arresting team. The policemen returned fire, killing Chan, the report added.
Case investigators SPO1 Joselito Barredo Jr., PO3 Rommel Bautista and PO2 Edgar Manapat inspected the area while the Northern Police District’s Crime Laboratory Office recovered 19 casings from an M-16 rifle and several casings from a .45-cal. pistol, among others.
The victim’s remains were taken to the National Bureau of Investigation as requested by Chan’s family who also asked that an autopsy be conducted.
