Alcala wife’s ancestral home razed in Lucena fire

LUCENA CITY, Philippines—A fire of still unknown origin broke out in a residential neighborhood here at noon Friday but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Supt. Allen Rae Co, Lucena police chief, said the blaze started at 12:15 p.m. in Barangay (village) 2.

The fire razed rows of houses along the busy P. Gomez Street, including the one-story wooden ancestral house of the wife of Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, Corazon Asuncion Maaño, a native of this city.

Two gravestone shops also burned down.

Local firemen assisted by firefighters from neighboring towns were still battling to control the blaze as of 1 p.m.
