Soldier, rebel killed in Negros Oriental encounter

MANILA, Philippines–Two were killed in clashes between soldiers and communist rebels in Negros Oriental on Friday, the military said.

Lt. Col. Harold Anthony Pascua, the Commanding Officer of 79th Infantry Battalion said that his troops were conducting security operations in Sitio Sandana in Mansangahan in Bais City past 10 a.m. when they encountered about 15 members of the New People’s Army.

A soldier and a communist rebel were killed from the clashes.

These rebels were believed to be from the Southeast Front of Komiteng Rehiyonal-Negros. They fled after the 30-minute encounter.

The identity of the soldier was withheld pending the notification of his family.

The soldiers were also able to recover personal belongings of the rebels.
