MANILA, Philippines–A tropical depression threatens to enter the Philippine area of responsibility by Sunday but it is forecast not to make landfall.
Leny Ruiz, weather forecaster of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), said the weather disturbance east of Luzon had intensified into a tropical depression.
“It will enter PAR on Sunday but it is not likely to make landfall and may head to Japan,” he told INQUIRER.net.
The tropical depression will be locally named “Florita” once it enters the PAR.
It will be a rainy weekend over most of the country due to a low pressure area that is enhanced by the southwest monsoon inside the PAR.
The LPA was last observed 280 kilometers east of Baler in Aurora.
“Metro Manila, the regions of Ilocos, Cordillera, Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon will have moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides,” Pagasa said.
“The rest of Luzon and Mindanao will be cloudy with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms. Visayas will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms,” it added.
Heavy rains on Thursday evening spawned by a low pressure area inundated several parts of Metro Manila, stranding commuters and slowing traffic.
