UK police probe slaying of Saudi woman in Britain

/ 10:04 AM June 21, 2014

LONDON — British police say it’s not clear whether a Saudi student stabbed to death in eastern England was attacked because she was wearing Muslim clothing but they are questioning a man in her death.

Nahid Almanea was wearing a full-length Muslim robe and a headscarf when she was stabbed 16 times Tuesday while walking on a public path in Colchester, northeast of London. She had been studying English as part of an advanced degree program.

Police said Friday it was “simply not known” if anti-Islamic feelings played a part in the attack, adding that “jumping to conclusions is deeply unhelpful, wrong and dangerous.” Police said there were some similarities to a March killing of a disabled white man stabbed more than 100 times.

On Friday, police said they had arrested a 19-year-old man who was already in custody for an attempted attack Thursday on a jogger and were questioning him about the Almanea case.
