After Father’s Day: Policeman taking kids to school killed in ambush

MANILA, Philippines—The four children of PO2 Estratuto Bagsic did not know that Sunday would be the last time they would celebrate Father’s Day with their daddy around.

Bagsic, who was about to drop off his wife and kids to school before reporting for work, died in an ambush that his wife survived early Monday in Batangas province.

Assigned at the Regional Headquarters Support Group of Camp Vicente Lim in Laguna province, Bagsic and his wife Agnes were shot by two motorcycle-riding assailants while inside a brown L300 van.

Police said the incident happened around 6:30 a.m. at Barangay (village) Santor in Tanauan City.

The police officer was declared dead on arrival at C.P. Reyes Hospital. His wife survived but is currently under critical condition.

Superintendent Christopher Olazo, Tanauan City Police chief, told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview that the motorcycle-riding men, who were traversing the opposite lane, peppered the L300 van with gunshots, killing Bagsic and wounding his wife.

As the van stopped, one of the gunmen got off the motorcycle and opened the door of the van and shot Bagsic point-blank while cussing in Filipino.

According to Olazo, Bagsic’s children, all minors, were riding at the back portion of the van when they were attacked.

He said that before fleeing from the scene, the attackers took the service firearm of Bagsic.

Tanauan City Police are conducting further investigation.
