Alleged robber killed in shootout with police
MANILA, Philippines—An alleged robber, who held up and shot two men early Sunday morning, ended up dead in a shootout with Quezon City lawmen.
Gino Alburo, 23, of Barangay Tatalon, was killed instantly from multiple bullet wounds in the body, while his alleged victims: Richard Salazar, 28; and Gregory Benzon, 25, remain confined at the University of the East-Ramon Magsaysay (UERM) Hospital for the treatment of gunshot wounds in the face and in the chest.
According to Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU) head Chief Inspector Rodelio Marcelo, the incident started at around 1 a.m. at the corner of Victory Avenue and Manunggal Street in Barangay (village) Tatalon.
Janitors Salazar and Benzon were walking when Alburo allegedly robbed them at gunpoint, before shooting each man. Barangay peace and security officers (BPSOs) were alarmed by the gunfire and chased the suspect but were shot at.
The BPSOs spotted Alburo hiding in a dark alley along Elga Street and immediately sought police assistance.
Marcelo said that teams from the QCPD Galas station and the Special Reaction Unit (SRU) responded to the site, flushing out and directing Alburo to surrender from his hiding place. But instead of giving up, the suspect fired at the policemen while running towards the corner of Elga and Kaliraya Streets.
