Science Secretary Mario G. Montejo: University of the Philippines’ Most Distinguished Alumnus for 2014

MANILA, Philippines–Science Secretary Mario G. Montejo is the Most Distinguished Alumnus for 2014 of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association, the UPAA has announced in a statement.

Montejo, along with Lifetime Achievement Awardees Manuel S. Alba, Claudio B. Altura and Jesusa Bagan-Lara, as well as the other Distinguished Alumni Awardees, will be recognized at the UP general alumni-faculty homecoming and reunion on June 21 starting at 4 p.m. at Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman.

“As we have been doing in the past few years, the UPAA makes a special effort to identify unsung alumni achievers—those whose accomplishments in little-known corners of the country are remarkable but are unheralded and unrecognized,” said UPAA president Ponciano Rivera.

The other awardees for outstanding achievement in various fields are: Yvonne T. Chua, Susanah Lily L. Mendoza and Ma. Regina E. Reyes (for communication); Ma. Amihan Bonifacio-Ramolete, Jose Y. Dalisay Jr., Carlos L. Esguerra and Ivan Anthony S. Henares (culture and the arts); Alfredo Mahar Francisco A. Lagmay (disaster mitigation); Luis Maria R. Calingo, Rolando S. de la Cruz, Mariechel Jamias-Navarro and Jonathan C. Malicsi (educational innovation);

Roberto N. del Rosario and Nazario S. Racoma (entrepreneurship and employment creation); Carmelita Garcia-Hansel, William S. Gruezo and Daisy J. Serrano (environmental conservation and sustainable development); Rowena V. Guanzon (gender equality and women empowerment); Rep. Isagani S. Amatong and Gerardo A. I. Esquivel (good governance); Dr. Carmencita David-Padilla (health education); Solicitor General Francis H. Jardeleza (law and judiciary); Dr. Fernando Basilio F. Piedad (medicine); Gen. Emmanuel T. Bautista (peace and social cohesion);

Ma. Victoria E. Añonuevo and Sr. Marita C. Berbano (poverty alleviation and human development); Dr. Abundio A. Balgos (public health promotion); Teresita J. Herbosa, Daisy Catherine L. Mandap and Ambassador Virgilio A. Reyes Jr. (public service); and Porfirio M. Aliño, Alonzo A. Gabriel and Meliton U. Ordillas Jr. (science and technology).

The Distinguished Service Awardees are Mimosa Cortez-Ocampo, Dr. Eric S. M. Talens, and the UP Singing Ambassadors, founded and conducted by Prof. Edgardo L. Manguiat.

The UPAA Hong Kong Chapter will receive the Distinguished Service Award for an alumni chapter. The Multi-Generation UP Alumni Family Awardees are the Fernando S. Algas family, Basil H. Jajurie family, Cayetano-Lardizabal family, Germar family, Jose P. Laurel family, Generoso-Jocson family, Tillah-Rasul-Bernardo family and Jose Jesus A. Vergara family.

The yearly awards are conferred on alumni who have demonstrated in their chosen fields extraordinary achievements and excellent contributions that bring about substantial benefits to society and distinct honor to UP.
