5.1-quake, 14 aftershocks jolt Surigao

MANILA, Philippines—A 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Surigao on Friday night has so far caused at least 14 aftershocks, state volcanologists said.

The tremor was recorded 173 kilometers southeast of Surigao City at 11:26 p.m, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The tectonic quake had a depth of 24 kilometers.

The Phivolcs said that aftershocks are expected. From 11:51 p.m. until 8:25a.m. on Saturday morning, Phivolcs has recorded 14 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3.2 to 4.9.

Most of the aftershocks were recorded northeast of Cortes town in Surigao del Sur.
