2 NPA rebels killed in clash with Army in Surigao del Norte

MANILA, Philippines—Two communist rebels were killed in an encounter with government troops in Surigao del Norte on Thursday, the military said.

Soldiers from the Army’s 30th Infantry Battalion engaged about 20 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) near Mount Taglintian in Tagbuwayan village, Mainit town past 6 a.m., said Eastern Mindanao Command spokesperson Captain Alberto Caber in a belated report.

The NPA withdrew after the 30-minute firefight. The soldiers were able to recover one M653 rifle, one M14 rifle, one AK47 rifle and one caliber 22 rifle-homemade.

There were no casualties among the soldiers.
