Friday, May 30, is the 122nd birth anniversary of the country’s first national artist, the late painter Fernando Amorsolo. Born in 1892 in Paco, Manila, Amorsolo’s major works included “Maiden in a Stream,” “Dalagang Bukid” and “The Mestiza,” among others. He was named outstanding alumnus of the University of the Philippines in 1940. After his death on April 24, 1972, he was declared National Artist for Painting. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
