6.2-magnitude earthquake strikes off Indonesia – USGS

JAKARTA – A 6.2-magnitude quake struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra Sunday, with no immediate tsunami warning issued.

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit at a depth of nine kilometers (six miles), just over 300 kilometers west of the coastal city Banda Aceh.

The quake occurred at around 7:00 am (0100 GMT), USGS said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 devastated Indonesia, where 170,000 people were killed, mostly in Aceh province.
