MANILA, Philippines—It’s a girl.
Her court-ordered hospital confinement came in the nick of time. Hours after political prisoner Andrea Rosal, daughter of the late communist party spokesperson “Ka Roger” Rosal, was admitted to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), she gave birth prematurely to a girl at 8 a.m. Saturday.
According to Rosal’s lawyer, Edre Olalia, the baby, to be named Diona Andrea, was immediately placed in an incubator. As of noon Saturday, her mother had not seen her.
A Facebook post by the Free Andrea Rosal Movement, composed of Rosal’s supporters, said “the baby was not crying at birth.”
“She has to be [placed] inside an incubator and a ventilator will be [attached] to her because she has difficulty breathing,” the post said.
Rosal is charged with kidnapping with murder, with the Philippine Army accusing her of being the secretary of the communist New People’s Army in the southern Tagalog region.
Asked if the baby would come back to jail with Rosal, Olalia said, “Ultimately, it’s the choice of the mother, especially during the weaning period.” Jaymee T. Gamil
