TAGUM CITY, Philippines – Three government troop personnel were hurt in a landmine explosion believed to be set off by communist rebels in Asuncion, Davao del Norte on
Sunday, police on Monday said.
Soldiers from the army’s 60th Infantry Battalion were conducting patrols at the vicinity of Napungas village when hit by the blast around 8 a.m., said Chief Inspector Michael Seguido, Asuncion police station chief.
“A ten-minute exchange of fire ensued as soldiers and militiamen were patrolling at the boundary of Purok (Settlement) 4 and 5 before the suspected rebels fled,” Seguido said, adding an army corporal and two army men suffered shrapnel wounds and are now recuperating at a local hospital.
He said the army was now conducting pursuit operations against the rebels.
Sunday’s incident came in the wake of clashes and abductions by communist rebels in Southern Mindanao, which have killed or wounded at least a dozen people.
